Possums On The Roof

from The Australian Suite Volume 2 by Tony Barnard

/

about

You haven’t lived until you’ve had a brush-tailed possum or two jump on your roof. Especially a tin roof like the one we had at our house in Bondi. It’s a sound you won’t forget for some time. They leap from a great height and land like a meteorite has come to end the world, and if that isn’t enough to get your attention, they then launch into this skittery scratchy dance that can last for ages; then, if they aren’t happy with their dancing partner they make a weird noise, a bit like an asthmatic monster having conniptions in tap shoes (hence the fourths in the harmony). The possum in the picture is responsible for many a sleepless night, but I did love him. Sometimes, he would come down from the trees for his nightly carrot, run up my leg and wrap his tail around my arm and swing from it; sometimes he would come into the house and sit on the bookshelves! Ya gotta love possums! My possums are James Morrison on trombone, Bob Barnard on cornet, Warwick Alder on trumpet, Brother Adam on drums, Dave Pudney on bass and me on guitar, the vocal at the beginning is my 5 year old daughter Cara.
