In May of this year, I was delighted to be booked for a series of gigs with the American 7 string jazz guitar legend, Howard Alden, of whose impressive playing and career you are no doubt aware of. We had a great time and clicked from the very start. We talked about recording on the very first night, and four days later we were in the studio. We only had three hours to record due to Howards playing commitments around the UK, so we arrived at the studio, set up and started playing as soon as the mikes were set and only stopped for a short break. All the tracks are first takes, as we didn’t have the time to fuss about. We treated it like a live gig and it has the spontaneity, energy and sense of fun of a real live gig. It’s a testament to the musicianship of Howard and Simon that everything went so easily and beautifully. Howard and Simon played my original tunes with consummate ease and brilliance, never having seen the music before. Howard is a marvellous player and has a stunning facility on his 7 string guitar. Simon is a master of the bass, as you can hear, and his contribution to the session is formidable. It’s a great swinging album and I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.
