about

The red-bellied black snake is one of Australia’s commonest venomous snakes, but I have a soft spot for them, having seen many in the wild. They are beautiful to look at. Once, while walking through the bush, I accidentally stepped on the tail of a seven footer; it leapt straight up in the air in fright, straighter than a broomstick and unlike anything I could ever have imagined a snake to be capable of, up to around my head height! I also leapt up in surprise and fright. We stared at each other eye to eye in that split second, and simultaneously, jumped in opposite directions, where we both stopped to take stock of the situation. We looked at each other warily, then it turned and quietly went on its way. I watched in wonder.
My snakes in the grass are, Alan Davey on trumpet, Dan Barnett on trombone, and Glenn Henrich on tenor sax, all taking four bars each, capturing the relaxed nature of this marvellous creature.
